Mantella aurantiaca

Mantella aurantiaca (in German Golden Mantella) is probably the most famous mantella from Madargaskar. Its uniform color ranging from corn yellow, orange and red. The underside is slightly lighter and with the males on the undersides of the hind legs interspersed with white. The females look wider and with a length of 22 mm to 23 slightly larger than the males (about 20 mm in size). Their range stretched across the entire east side of the island. They live in larger populations in the swampy forest areas with dense vegetation and leaf litter. They can dig in loose soil up to 40 cm deep. In the rainy season, the lower floor area is flooded with water. The Golden Mantella is day-active, and has been going in the morning in search of food. Around midday, when the sun is strongest, the animals hiding for some time! Females are somewhat averse than males and thus see less often. The egg-laying usually occurs in damp and dark hiding places.

Mantella madagascariensis

These 22-31 mm in size Mantell type occurs mainly on the east coast of Madagascar. It has a black base color, yellow-green front legs, each with a large green spot on the front legs, the legs are mottled orange, from the tip of the snout to the eyes, runs a yellow ribbon. Daytime temperatures should be in the long term not exceeding 25 ° C. The night temperatures are tolerated to 18 ° C. The eggs are stored as Mantella aurantiaca into small balls in underground caves. The development of the eggs takes about 14 days, the metamorphosis of approximately 2 months. The young frogs are very shy and inconspicuous at the beginning of beige-gray.
