POISON DART FROGS
ILLNESSES
This can be only one attempt to summarise something into the shortness for which the specialist par excellence - Dr. Mutschmann - needs 352 sides in his book. Therefore immediately here the book recommendation for everybody who would like intensely to argue with the subject.
Illnesses of the amphibians of Frank Mutschmann

Flap text: In increasing measure veterinarians are confronted with problems of the treatment of "exotics". Although amphibians play an important role in the biological-medical research for a long time, the "amphibian medicine" in the appropriate literature attracts only low attention. To remedy him, the topical state of knowledge was summarised in this work. To the practical person is available with it a counsellor who enables to him to recognise pathological changes and to treat straight. According to this aim is given a short overview of the rezenten amphibians, her life-style, reproduction, and ecological meaning. Basic implementation to anatomical and well-chosen physiological specific features like thermo regularisation, water household, metabolism and infection defences as well as aspects of the sore healing with Amphibians rounds the general part. In the special part are described - after organ systems jointedly - the diagnostic, prophylactic and therapeutic possibilities. The interested amphibian holder finds important tips to the care of these animals, to the most frequent position mistakes and for disturbances of the reproduction. The meaning of amphibians as a potential safety hazard for the human health is as mentioned as regulations which are to be followed with the contact with amphibians. In 1998, Parey book publishing company, Berlin, ISBN 3-8263-3095-1, 352 sides
At this point I would like to offer a Powerpoint presentation of Mr. Mutschmann to the view and from a talk also the summary. Therapeutic possibilities and medimentation are described here.
UNIVERSAL
Over and over again similar or same problems with ill or presumably ill frogs appear. Just with beginners this understandable manner leads fast to strong uncertainty. Because illnesses do not announce themselves in the approach, unfortunately, one stands completely amazedly before a problem and good advice is expensive. Not surprisingly that then fast the cause is searched with the breeder / shop assistant. But this is more seldom the case. Rather it depends on the position terms. An optimally opposed terrarium is the prerau's settlement, that an animal after the acquisition not immediately feels bad. How often I have experienced on the stock exchange prospective customers who were completely excited and entrancedly from the coloured frogs and bought to themselves only animals and searched then in the connection the suitable terrarium on the stock exchange. Too often a lot of money is given in all euphoria on a new animal, but too little on the later dwelling. I would not like to speak of appropriate to the species position at all when I see pictures of too dry and pathetically furnished tanks. Besides, there are however, thus many springs and aid on the Internet which should relieve to one avoiding beginner's mistake. Apart from that books are read today rather seldom, before one begins with a new hobby. An investment, in any case, is worthwhile.
TIPS AND ADVICE:
- the ill animal as far as possible separate and in quarantine hold.
- furthermore well observe and optimally with feed animals supply
- an excrement test collect and send in or after consultation with the veterinarian send in a deduction (e.g., EXOMED in the animal park 64, 10319 Berlin, phone: 030/51067701, eMail: mutschmann@exomed.de).
- amphibians / reptiles experienced veterinarian visit, best of all in the approach possible veterinarians find (e.g.: DGHT:Tierärzte)
From 4 probably most frequent illnesses of our amphibians here a few details:
- spindly leg syndrome (SLS)
- Horn-rimmed inflammation and conjunctivitis
- Red Laying Disease, Aeromonas
- Chytridiomykose
Spindly leg syndrome
An underdevelopment of the forelegs is called match leg syndrome with Dendrobatiden and representatives of other frog Amphibian types. To the tadpoles grow or on both sides only underdeveloped forelegs which prevent, as a rule, a land way. However, with tail Amphibians the problem is unknown.
Cause:
The cause is not cleared yet finally. It becomes gone out from genetic causes, lack food of the tadpoles, as well as from environmental conditions like water temperature etc. After my experiences, match legs can be prevented above all by diverse and high vitamin feed care of the parental animals, observance by a break of clutch and use of rainwater for the tadepole breed.
Symptoms:
The illness leads to a deformity of the forelegs and an underdevelopment of the musculature. The affected Jung's frogs create either the land way not, or they take up no food and starve within short time. Malformed animals should be sorted out immediately.
Precaution:
There are no secure precaution measures, as long as the cause is cleared not completely. The causes can vary from case to case. Everybody should try to examine to optimise the position terms and. The first close to measure the care of the parental animals form more diverse. Vitamins, perhaps, UV radiotherapy test. Check secondly the used tadepole water. Tadepole tea, oak leaves and Java moss try. Tadepole feed check on durability and quality. Living feed like red and white mosquito larvae or also frost feed passed away kinds try out.
Horn-rimmed inflammation and conjunctivitis
Horn or conjunctivitis (Keratoconjunctivitis) can lead to the loss of sight of one or both eyes. She is only difficult in the initial stage to recognise and if it is recognised, it is supposed already too late. In some cases the illness is recognised only by the strong loss of weight of the frog.
Cause:
The illness can have different causes. On the one hand injuries in the ocular area can lead to it, on the other hand, it can simply also concern an infection. Parasites can also release the inflammation what is the case, however, rather with little devils. With lipiden Keratopatie the cause is not known, can have her origin, however, possibly in too fat food.
Symptoms:
Loss of sight of one or both eyes what leads to the fact that the animal can take up no more food, because the hunting isn’t possible any more. With my ill animal I could observe that though the frog went hunting, the feed animal, however, did not get. I explain this in such a way that he could see though on an eye still what by which limited visual ability of the other eye could not estimate, however, the distance any more and played a wrong note, hence, permanently. The animal thereby lost weight massively. With the time the ill eye also strongly became overcast. At last the whole led to the death of the animal.
Treatment:
The ill animal should be separated as soon as possible and the eye with suitable eye drops be treated. The amphibian-expert veterinarian can provide closer information. In addition, it should be tried to bring the animal to the food (e.g., with the tweezers).
Red Laying Disease, Aeromonas
For 100 years one knows an illness, them the names: Red Red Red-Leg-Disease received. Primarily by Aeromonas hydrophilia caused Red Red Red-Leg-Disease is released by stress. The bright ventralen body sides and thigh inner surfaces show red discolorations which led Red Red Red-Leg-Disease letzlich in the English usage also to the name. Besides, it concerns petichiale bleeding or Ekchymosen in skin, skeletal musculature and in the digestive tract as well as hypodermic edemas. The remaining animal body is remarkably pale. Now and then bloody mucus is vomited. The affected animals are apathetic and put the absorption of nutrients. Single patients show skin tears or are blown up. Before the entry of the death are observed on the occasion of cramps. Red Red Red-Leg-Disease is a factor illness and appears almost exclusively after position mistakes like not enough space, bad water quality, transport faults and/or wrong of elective temperature. Last but not least is the high germ number in the position medium Trigger of this illness, with beside Aeromonas hydrophila of wide germs like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas liqufaciens, Alcaligenes faecalis, Mima sp., Flavobacterium, Citrobacter and Proteus can appear. Aeromonas hydrophila leads not only to Red Red Red-Leg-Disease, but also to the widespread deaths of larvae of the Anuren, how for instance with Rana sylvatica. Hird and employee could prove this cause with her investigations with 63% of examined 104 adult Rana pipiens and held responsible this for the decline of the population. The cause received from the different investigators in the meantime the following synonyms: Bacillus ranicida, Bacillus hydrophilius fuscus, Bacillus hydrophilius, Bacterium ranicida and Proteus hyrophilius. He releases not only Red Red Red-Leg-Disease, but is proved with sections in the internal organs and with the mouth decay. Aeromonas salmonicida which was ascertained only with fishing led in a breeding group of Xenopus laevis to considerable losses. Hautulzerationen one found in the area of the Maxillaren, Mandibularen and noses. The skin lesions were marked by multifocal erosion and deep ulzerierende Nekrosen. The liver contained multifocal Infiltrate of mono-nuclear leucocytes. With all Individien a Nephrose was trained. Glorioso and employee isolated from the heart blood from Rana catesbeiana the cause Aeromonas shigelloides.
Precaution:
The precaution lies, primarily, in the correct, appropriate to the species position. Further is to be respected of course to a good hygiene. Frequent water change helps to hold the germ number to a certain extent and thereby decreases the infection risk. This should be given anyhow, because causes can lead like Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and other also to other illnesses with the frogs. Thus Aeromonas hydrophilia can release, for example, widespread deaths with tadpoles.
Treatment:
After elimination and euthanasia of ill frogs the remaining continuance must be treated immediately antibiotic. In parallel in addition it is advisable to put on an anti-biogramme and to change if necessary the antibiotic. Riviere recommends a Gentamicin - bain-marie (1 mg / 1ml water). We cannot confirm a success with this therapy. A frequent water change to the lowering of the germ number, distributing the infected amphibians on several washbasins as well as a temperature sinking on 15-18 degrees centigrade pointed with us better ones occurs. In any case, the terraria and tools are to be disinfected thoroughly. As it is advisable for Mykosen also here every now and then a passing drier, warmer position. Any environment change restrains the germ development in certain manner, nevertheless, weakens also now and then the organism of the animals. Red Red Red Red Red-Leg-Disaese steps especially often with the position in lab or transport containers with artificial substrate on.n In some cases moving the amphibians to a subsoil corresponding her needs (gravel, mud, loose earth ect created.) remedy in spite of them in it also richly to available germs. Edging out or diluting the Aeromonas by the influence other micro-organisms is valid than natural remedial method.
Chytridiomykose
This illness becomes by a primitive mushroom of the family Chytridiomycota, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (LONGCORE et. al., in 1999), released and shows almost worldwide one of the biggest problems, above all for free-living amphibians. In the terrarium the illness was proved above all with Dendrobaten which were imported from Central America or with poststock animals which had contact to imported little devils. Chytridiomykose is able to do a whole amphibian continuance dahinraffen within short time. The infection illness concerns Anuren (frog Amphibians) as well as Urodelen (tail Amphibians). Newer investigations have shown that above all kinds from chiller living spaces as for example to mountain rain forests are concerned. Though there the minimum temperatures rise by the global warming, however, by the cloud education resulting from it the maximum temperatures drop. This temperature structure meets the mushroom very much (POUNDS et. al. in 2006). Today one assumes from the fact that, e.g., with 67% during the last 17 years of extinct, more than 100 harlequin's toad kinds Chytridiomykose are to blame.
Cause:
Cause for the illness is a droplet mushroom which could be identified only in 1997 as a trigger of the illness. After the newest supposition the mushroom comes originally from southern Africa and was kidnapped by the person about the claw frogs (Xenopus laevis) which were used from 1930 to 1960 for pregnancy tests (WELDON et. al., in 2004). He was proved first in Australia and America. There he threatens many, anyhow already under pressure standing amphibian kinds. However, in the meantime, he is also in Europe, above all on the Iberian peninsula, but also in Germany and Italy, appeared. In the meantime, also in Switzerland the mushroom is widespread and was proved, among the rest, in the cantons SHEET, bread unit, LU, SG, ZH several times. It were found already increased dead amphibians who were infected with the mushroom. Widespread deaths were observed till this day, however, still none.
Symptoms:
Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis penetrates into the uppermost skin layer of postmetamorpher amphibians and lives on the keratin available there. As symptoms apathy, hunger strike, long stays are described in the water as well as redness and separations of the skin, as well as sudden deaths. Ill animals cannot turn round any more if they are laid on the back (Övermann, in 2004). Tadpoles and larvae are concerned by the infection only in the mouth, because only there the keratin necessary for the mushroom exists. In the skin they lack this horn-rimmed layer.
The newest knowledge assumes from the fact that a large part of the Dendrobaten are struck in the Terraristik unnoticed which does not come illness, however, to the outbreak. Indeed, changes can lead in the position or other health problems to the explosive increase of the mushroom and to the outbreak of the illness.
Frequent triggers of a Chytridiomykose outbreak are:
- New entries in the terrarium, in particular little devils and animals from dubious springs
- Other infections (e.g., Nematoden, Aeromonas-or Pseudomonas cause)
- Sudden change of the climate (Drily / rainy season) or the terrarium (-> stress)
Precaution:
The usual hygiene measures are valid it in the terrarium. Moreover, new entries should always go through a quarantine phase (should be made anyhow always). Little devil's animals should be renounced basically. Indeed, the appearance of the mushroom is not to be led back exclusively on bad position terms.
To prevent stress with the animals so far possibly, a very appropriate to the species position is to be aimed. In addition belong together with a sensibly furnished terrarium also the terrarium climate, the lighting and a well-balanced food of the animals. Besides is to be advised not to connect several amphibian terraria by a common sewage system with each other. This would enable to the mushroom easily to reach from a terrarium in the next.
Treatment
There is still none guarantees for successful-promissory methods of treatment. Because the mushroom prospers at deeper temperatures (17 - 25°C) better than at temperatures more than 25°C, it seems sensible to hold ill animals at a little bit raised temperature. The only successful-promissory drug is Itrakonazol, mostly comes, however, a treatment too late, because there is still no possibility to diagnose Chytridiomykose in the living animal perfectly. An expert quarantine is natural with an infestation absolutely essentially (Quaratäne instructions).
Importantly: However, it is to be seen anyway also to the fact that no dead animals and no infected material from the terrarium reach in the environment and can threaten there the local amphibians. Best of all contact is established with a veterinarian or a responsible place.
Chytridiomykose in the open land
The illness might be jointly responsible together with the destruction of the living space to a large part for the fact that we stand currently at the beginning of the presumably biggest extinction with a vertebrate class since the setting of the dinosaurs. About one third of about 6000 known amphibian kinds are threatened immediately by the extinction, more than 130 kinds have got lost during the last years already irreparably. Stopping this development probably becomes the challenge biggest up to now in the protection of endangered species.
The biggest risk that the mushroom is kidnapped probably goes out from Herpetologen and amphibian friends who visit different biotopes within short time. It is important that these people of the risk are aware and behave accordingly. Thus the thorough cleaning and disinfection of the equipment and the shoes is absolutely compelling with the change of the visited biotope. To the disinfection unwatered Javel water and 70%th alcohol have proved themselves. However, both should not be used in immediate waters nearness, because it concerns toxic substances. Also Virkon has turned out suited for field. With bigger breaks between the single biotope visits one leaves the equipment also completely or boil briefly (min. 5 min. with> 60°C). One finds further information to the topical Chytridsituation in Switzerland with KARCH.
RESULT:
It has become quieter again around the dangerous Chitrid – mushroom. Still before 3 - to 4 years it was very acute and everybody knew immediately what one speaks of. Nobody wanted him and, nevertheless, almost everybody had him. One more the other (absolutely unconsciously) less. So at least also the supposition of Mr. Mutschmann, because the cause has been kidnapped in many terraria. Only under unfavorable conditions he came to outbreak and then had epidemic-like character.
The treatment of our arrow poison frogs quite simply does not develop, because the available drugs come everybody from the benefit keeping of pets or partly also from the human medicine. With it the biggest problem is also the dosage, because the drugs are co-ordinated mostly on kg - life weight. However, a frog weighs only few g and thus it is difficult to find to the impossibly right dosage. A compulsive feeding is as almost impossible as the care of inflammations with ointments. What remains is the knowledge to do all conceivable in the approach, so that it does not come to illnesses. An ill frog is as a rule a doomed man!
